With an introduction by Alison Bechdel, CHARLOTTE BRONTE BEFORE JANE EYRE presents a stunning examination of a woman who battled against the odds to make her voice heard. She sought to cast an empathetic lens on characters often ignored by popular literature of the time, questioning societal assumptions with a sharp intellect and changing forever the landscape of western literature. Charlotte, like her sisters Emily and Anne, was passionate about her work. But what of the famous writer herself? Originally published under the pseudonym of Currer Bell, JANE EYRE was born out of a magnificent, vivid imagination, a deep cultivation of skill, and immense personal hardship and tragedy. Do you think, because I am poor, obscure, plain and little, I am soulless and heartless? You think wrong!-I have as much soul as you,-and full as much heart! Charlotte Bronte's JANE EYRE is a beloved classic, celebrated today by readers of all ages and revered as a masterwork of literary prowess.

All these linguistic terms we've grappled with to describe what happened to American democracy tend to have these associations with foreign countries.īut there's actually a fascinating footnote on that about a fascist coup plot in the United States, at least one that was alleged. I think it's probably also true about insurrection. I think it's powerful language, because it's the kind of language we don't normally think of in an American context and that's, I think, part of the power of that phrase and the effect of it. One of the things that's striking about talking to Congressman Raskin, who's serving on the January 6 Committee is that he refers to what happened on January 6th as a fascist coup or a would-be fascist coup sometimes. If you haven't heard that episode, I really recommend it. Recently we had Jamie Raskin, the Congress member, on the podcast. As she did then, Poppendieck combines her talents as historian and sociologist with those of an institutional psychologist to help us get in touch with our nation’s school food neurosis. We are already indebted to Poppendieck for her earlier works Knee Deep in Breadlines and Sweet Charity where she employed her sleuthing skills to unravel the historical contradictions and compounding irrationalities associated with feeding our nation’s neediest citizens. Fortunately for them and America’s 55 million students who gulp down something resembling a meal every school day, they’ve been joined by Hunter College sociologist Janet Poppendieck who gives us the best reasons yet for unconditional school food reform. Fox looked uncomfortably like the skins Bogdana hung up to dry after her kills. There was a lot about convalescing and chilblains, so I figured it might make him feel better. Since then, I’d stayed at my camp, reading him a novel about an impoverished governess I’d taken from the library when I’d picked up Foraging in the American Southeast. One night when I returned, I found he’d been attacked by a squirrel looking for material to nest in and most of his insides had been pulled out. Worse, there were a few times I’d left him behind when I went to sit underneath windows at Bex’s school or the local community college, repeating probably useless poems and snatches of history to myself, or doing sums by tracing the numbers in the earth. Fox back from my unparents’ boxes, I’d cuddled up with him every night, and his fur had become dingy from sleeping on moss and dirt.
